Guide to Precinct Caucuses

Are you among the majority who have not attended a caucus? Does it seem mysterious and maybe a bit risky? Not to worry!

Step one is to find out where your political party’s caucuses are being held. Starting January 15, you can go to the Secretary of State’s site to find out where to caucus. Just like if you were voting in a primary or general election, caucus locations are determined by where you live. Just type in your address or zip code to find out where your caucuses are being held on February 5.

Grace Kelly (her real name, nickname “Kelly”) wrote a non-partisan guide to party caucuses that reveals the secrets and enables the reader to get comfortable with the proceedings. When that is done, you can relax and enjoy the event!

Writing Your Resolution

Step one is to go to your party’s Web site. See the list in the right hand column. In the case of the DFL, navigate to About the DFL/Resources for Party Units. There is a lot of good stuff there, including Precinct Caucus Documents. Among these is the new resolutions form. Or try here for another Acrobat version. For a Microsoft Word version that is easy to edit in digital format, look here.

Here is some good advice from a member of the DFL Platform Commission:

…As a member of the DFL State Platform Commission, I must point out

1- There is a newly adopted (by the state DFL Central Committee) resolution form which must be used. It can be downloaded from the DFL site…

2- On the new form, the resolution must appear on the front of the form and the whereases should be on the back of the same form.

3- The form must be filled out correctly and completely, including a tally of the caucus vote when it adopted/fails.

4- Only one resolution can appear on a form.

Please help make the Platform Commission job easier.

That’s good advice. Please follow the rules of your party to ensure full consideration of your resolution!

What Is This Site About?

This site is a clearinghouse for resolutions to be introduced at the Minnesota party caucuses on February 5, 2008. It is not restricted to any particular political party and we welcome resolutions expressing progressive solutions from everyone. The administrator is Joel Clemmer and the editors are Rebekah Smith and Santwana Dasgupta. If you have a potential addition for the site, please communicate with one of us.

We welcome your thoughts on the resolutions and offer this “Blog” section of the site for feedback and discussion.

The most important point: Turn out for your precinct caucus on February 5!
